The time to register for the Selma Recreation Department’s youth football season is running out.

Monday is the last day for players to register and football director Terry Jackson is expecting a big crowd. Over 100 players registered Saturday and the final day usually sees at least that many players sign up, Jackson said.

Jackson said he thinks he has 270 players signed up, but he is confident that number will approach 450 by the end of Monday.

“The last day I usually get from 100 to 150,” Jackson said.

There’s a chance the registration deadline will be extended, depending on how Monday goes, Jackson said. He said the reason he’s considering extending the deadline is because Dallas County Schools started a week later than Selma City Schools. Jackson said he sends home flyers at each school, which is how many parents find out about the registration.

Since students at the county schools just got into the classroom, many of them are just finding out.

Jackson said a majority of the students who registered on Saturday were from county schools.

There is a $10 registration fee, even for players who participated in past years. The registration fee is mandatory and non-refundable.

To register, a child must bring his birth certificate, the registration fee of $10 and an adult has to sign the registration card. Also, the child must be present so that he can be weighed at the time of registration.

Jackson said many parents forget to bring their child’s birth certificate.

“A lot of them are still forgetting their birth certificates,” Jackson said.

“That’s been part of our problem because we are having to send some of them back because of their birth certificate. I hate to send them back and have them come back but we have to check that to make sure we put them in the right age bracket.”

Although the official schedule has not been released, Jackson said he’s shooting for the season to start on the third Saturday of September, which would be Sept. 19.
