Keith wins opener in five sets
The Keith Bears may be young, but they didn’t look it on Thursday.
Keith (1-0) opened the season with a five-set victory at Autaugaville (0-1) 17-25, 25-15, 25-10, 19-25, 19-17. Head coach Towanna Flennory said she was proud of her team for showing the poise and leadership needed to pull out the fifth set.
Flennory said Senterrica Ellis, Alyshia Boone and seventh-grader Akese Jones were major contributors to the victory. In a tight match, the final set was decided by Calandria Carter’s serving.
“She came back and served two aces back to back to win the match,” Flennory said.
Keith’s next match is Tuesday at Southside at 1 p.m.
Selma falls to Isabella in season opener
Selma’s volleyball season probably didn’t open the way the Saints had hoped.
In a road match at Isabella, the Saints’ varsity fell three sets to zero in a lopsided opener. The Selma junior varsity also was defeated 2-1.
“We are a young team. We don’t have any seniors, two juniors and the rest are freshman and sophomores and a couple of eighth graders,” said Selma head coach Melissa White. “They are still learning the system; learning the game. It was a measuring stick for us just to see where we are and to see what we need to do as a whole and as an individual.”
Selma will host Greenville in its home opener Monday at 4 p.m.
Morgan Academy’s match cancelled
Morgan Academy’s scheduled volleyball match Thursday against Clarke Prep was cancelled.
The Senators (2-2) next scheduled game is at Hooper Academy on Tuesday.
