Fraternity to sponsor talent competition

The local chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. is offering area high school students the opportunity to show off their talents for the chance to win scholarships and compete at a higher level.
The Talent Hunt competition is a chance for performing arts students to show off their skills and work their way to the top.
“It’s a signature program of our organization and a mandated program. All of the chapters throughout the country in our organization are charged to bring this youth program to their communities,” said Terrance Platt, an organizer of the competition.
“We just know that there are tons of talented people here in the Selma community and we want to showcase them to the community and just provide them a platform to express their talents.”
Platt said the competition has been in Selma before, but it’s been a long time.
“It’s been a while since we’ve done this program here in Selma, so this will be the first time that we’ve done it in many years,” he said. “We do see the need for it here in the Selma community giving exposure.”
Platt said the program has many benefits to potential participants, and he is hopeful that many students will come out and audition.
“The program itself is designed to give exposure, encouragement and financial assistance to high school students participating in the performing arts,” Platt said. “We want them to come out and participate and let us see what Selma has to offer.”
The competition is open to only solo artists, and qualifying participants will compete for performance scholarships in the amount of $150 for first place, $100 for second place and $50 for third. The local winner will also have the opportunity to compete for additional prizes at the state, district and possibly national level.
“Our program has touched thousands of students, many of whom have gone on to make outstanding contributions in their communities throughout the world,” Platt said.
“Many have earned scholarships and distinguished awards through their participation in this program.”
All students that are interested in participating must first audition at no cost.
Auditions will take place at J. A. Pickard Auditorium at the School of Discovery on Saturday, Sept. 5 at 10 a.m. Students are asked to turn in all registration forms by Friday. Forms can be found at local schools or can be picked up from the Wooten Law Firm, located at 309 Church St.
The actual competition will take place at the auditorium on Sept. 13 at 4:30 p.m.
