TROY — Jackson Henderson scored two touchdowns and Sam Brackin added another as Morgan Academy defeated Monroe Academy 21-13 Friday night to win its first game of the season.
The game was tied 7-7 at halftime, but the Senators broke through in the second half.
“It’s the first game we’ve ran the ball effectively,” Morgan Academy head coach Jake Wingo said. “We had to have over 200 yards rushing. That was our goal coming in. Coach [Jeremy] Carter, our offensive coordinator, said that if we got over 200 offensive rushing yards we would win the game, and we did it. They did a great job.”
Pike Liberal Arts head coach Gene Allen said he would take blame for the team’s second loss of the season saying he felt he hadn’t prepared his team well enough before Friday’s outing.
“I really thought tonight we would be a lot better,” Allen said. “I thought we would be more focused, but we weren’t ready to play. There were too many penalties, too many missed tackles. We just had a lot of little things that killed us. That’s my fault. We didn’t have a good week of practice and it carried over to the game. “
Morgan Academy (1-2) will face another stiff challenge next Friday against No. 1 Edgewood Christian, which will enter on a 62 game winning streak.
