Concordia College Alabama couldn’t hold onto a double-digit fourth quarter lead against Stillman on Saturday and fell to the Tigers 18-15.
The Hornets led 15-2 after Deneco Hathorn intercepted Stillman quarterback Li’Jon Cordier and returned it 60 yards for a touchdown at the beginning of the fourth quarter. The Tigers rallied to score two touchdowns in the final six minutes of the game to stun Concordia and push the Hornets’ record to 0-3 on the year.
Both teams recorded a safety in the game, but the biggest of the two came with Stillman trailing 15-9 midway through the final quarter. With the Hornets backed up deep in their own territory, Stillman tackled a Concordia ball carrier in the end zone to pull within 15-11.
Cordier, who didn’t play in the first half, sparked the Tigers’ offense in the fourth quarter. He connected with Hudson Cain and Lenwood Joiner for touchdown strikes that put Stillman on top. Joyner caught 11 passes on the day for 83 yards for the Tigers.
Concordia head coach Stanley Conner wasn’t happy with some questionable officiating down the stretch but said his team just made too many mistakes in the long run.
“When you are on the road, you expect things like that, so you can’t give them anything,” Conner said. “You can’t jump offside and get celebration penalties and stuff like that.”
Concordia’s lone touchdown was scored by running back Alexander Montgomery, who ran the ball 21 times for 113 yards and a touchdown. Concordia quarterback James Crosby was 5-of-15 for 74 yards and one interception. William Jordan was also 1-of-5 passing for 17 yards.
Expected starter Jarvis Chambers did not play due to an injury, Conner said. He had no timetable for when Chambers might be back on the field.
The Hornets outgained Stillman 250 to 216 yards and only turned the ball over one time — a stark contrast from the team’s first two games.
Once again, penalties hindered the Hornets’ offense. Concordia had 15 penalties for 135 yards in the game.
“I thought we played hard,” Conner said. “We could’ve played smarter because when we got penalized it took us away from what we were trying to do.”
Concordia also missed two field goals, including having one blocked.
Jareth Embry led the Hornets in receiving. He caught three of Concordia’s six completed passes for 50 yards. Defensively, Jalin Edwards intercepted a pass for Concordia.
The Hornets will play at Southeastern University at 6 p.m. Saturday.
