Republican Presidential candidate Mike Huckabee will visit Selma on Thursday, Oct. 1 for a meet and greet and to make a few remarks.
Huckabee was the 44th govenor of Arkansas from 1996 until 2007 and has previously ran for President in 2008, winning the Iowa Republican caucus as well as several primaries, including Alabama.
Selma City Councilman Cecil Williamson is responsible for bringing Huckabee to the Queen City.
“I’m a member of the Republican State Executive Committee and I contacted him,” Williamson said. “I heard that he’s going to be in Alabama and a couple of other places, so I invited him to come to Selma and he accepted.”
Huckabee will be in Sylacauga at noon before making his way to Side Porch Sandwiches in Selma from 2:30-4:30 p.m. and then heading to Montgomery at 5:30 p.m.
“He’s going to be meeting and greeting people at the Side Porch Sandwich Shop, and he’s going to make some remarks while he’s here,” Williamson said. “I just think that it’s good for the city and … perhaps some people from outside the city will come and spend a little money here.”
Williamson said having a presidential candidate in Selma is a good thing for the city, and he is glad to host Huckabee.
“I’m certainly excited to have him and any other candidates that would like to come to Selma,” Williamson said. “It will be good publicity for the city.”
