The Selma Recreation Department is partnering with All in Sports Outreach to host a baseball camp at Bloch Park on Oct. 10, 2015. The one-day camp is free and takes place from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The camp is open to children aged 7 to 16 and includes instruction for all skill levels.
“There’s no reason that anybody who’s interested in playing baseball within those age groups should not be there. It’s a free camp,” said Selma Recreation Department baseball director Jamie Tellier.
High school, college and youth coaches from the area will all be volunteering their time to the camp to help young kids who are just learning baseball and older kids who have been playing baseball for years.
Tellier said 30 kids have already pre-registered for the baseball camp. Pre-registration is open at allinsportsoutreach.org. Registration on the day of the camp is open at Bloch Park Oct. 10 at 8 a.m.
Bob Frazer, who works with All in Sports Outreach and is a youth baseball coach in Selma, said every kid who signs up for the baseball camp has something to gain from it.
“It’s not just for little kids who haven’t played baseball,” Frazer said. “It’s also to help the advanced players as well.”
Frazer said the younger kids at the camp will work on basic skills like throwing, catching and hitting. The older, more experienced kids will work on more position specific skills.
Equipment will be provided, but bringing personal bats, helmets and gloves is encouraged. Older kids who have equipment specific to the position they play are also encouraged to bring it to the camp.
While the camp is designed to help older kids prepare to play in high school, Tellier is excited about the effect the camp will have on youth leagues in Selma.
“I really feel that Selma is going to benefit, especially youth baseball, from this camp,” he said.
Frazer said All In Sports Outreach is constantly looking for ways to teach children the gospel of Jesus Christ through sports. Frazer saw this camp as a great opportunity to do just that.
“We love the Lord and we love sports, and we just wanted a way to make a difference,” Frazer said.
