The Selma Art Guild invites people inside to look at walls of artwork all the time, but a new exhibit will incorporate the great outdoors.
The Selma Art Guild will hold an opening reception Sunday for its “In the Garden” show. The exhibit includes art that will be displayed through the guild as well as an outside garden.
“This is the first time that we’ve ever opened it up to have art back there,” said Selma Art Guild secretary Jo Pate. “We really are excited about the possibilities.”
Behind the effort to turn the garden into a gallery was Sally Jordan, president of the Guild. “This garden has always been back there, but it was full of concrete pieces and broken down stuff, it was very unattractive,” Pate said. “So Sally Jordan and her garden club got to work back there.”
At the reception, Greg Bjelke, David Sherer and Jo Taylor will all speak on various topics.
Bjelke, Selma councilman and owner of Four Seasons Garden Center, will talk about ornamental grasses and ground covers and how to use them in a garden.
Sherer will speak about longleaf pines, whle Taylor will talk about color in the garden.
“We really are excited to do this because we want to keep the garden growing,” Pate said. “Garden art has gotten very popular. And this isn’t just yard art … this is more artistic art, pottery and things like that.”
Pate said the show will also feature some new artists as well as those that have participated in many shows before.
“All of the inside art will be paintings and such that are related to the garden, such as flowers and trees and those sorts of things,” Pate said. “It will be full of art, outside art and inside art.”
The reception will be Sunday, Oct. 11 from 2-4 p.m. at the Guild, located at 508 Selma Avenue. For more information about the show, call 412-3852.
