After a practice preparing for Demopolis Thursday, R.B. Hudson’s Nicholas Parnell and Jeremiah Wright thought about how much the revenge factor plays into their desire to beat Demopolis, the last team to defeat the Bulldogs.
Parnell and Wright looked at each other, smiled and said, “a lot.”
Middle school football doesn’t have a postseason, so by default, Tuesday at Memorial Stadium is R.B. Hudson’s version of a championship game. At 7-0, the Bulldogs are just one game away from its third perfect season in school history, but the Demopolis Tigers are no slouch.
Recent thoughts of Demopolis don’t bring up happy memories for R.B. Hudson coaches and players. Last season, Demopolis defeated R.B. Hudson in the final game of the season to drop the Bulldogs to 6-2 on the season.
The year before that, in Ivery Williams’ final year as head coach, Demopolis spoiled R.B. Hudson’s undefeated record in the final game of the season with an 8-6 victory.
Williams, now an assistant coach at R.B. Hudson still feels the sting from that loss. He believes his team has the tools to beat Demopolis this year.
“I feel real good about the opportunity to actually whoop them,” Williams said. “I really want to win this game.”
This year’s R.B. Hudson team knew this was going to be a good season way before the season began. Williams said the players were talking about going undefeated in the spring.
“We have a chance here at R.B. Hudson to do something special this year,” said R.B. Hudson head coach Eugene Foster. “We have a lot of youngsters, but we’re really trying to do something special this year.”
R.B. Hudson’s closest call this season came in a home game against Linden, in which the Bulldogs trailed 8-0 at halftime. Last time R.B. Hudson completed a perfect season was 2011.
