The Selma Police Department is looking for answers after a rash of weekend shootings in Selma left three people injured and two in jail.
According to Sgt. Evelyn Ghant with the Selma Police Department, a 17-year-old male, a 53-year-old female and a 29-year-old male were shot within a few hours of each other Saturday.
Two arrests were made in one case but have yet to be made in the other two.
According to Ghant, 18-year-old Markeese Halliburt and 21-year-old Torrey Lewis were arrested and charged with discharging a firearm into an occupied building and first-degree assault.
Halliburt and Lewis allegedly fired shots at the 53-year-old Selma woman’s house Saturday night around 8:30 p.m. on the 1200 block of St. Phillips Street.
According to Ghant, the woman was sitting inside of her home when shots were fired at her home. A round from what investigators believe to be a 9mm handgun went through the house and struck her in the finger.
Ghant said the injury was not life threatening, but it did require surgery. The woman has been released from the hospital and is healing from her injury, according to Ghant.
The first shooting happened several hours earlier when a 17-year-old was shot around 1:21 a.m. on the 700 block of Pettus Street.
According to Sgt. Ghant, when officers arrived on scene they found the victim inside his uncle’s house with his family. He was shot while inside the house by rounds from a high-powered assault rifle.
“The young fellow was in the house just enjoying his family, and shots were fired,” Ghant said.
Ghant said the teenager sustained multiple gunshots to his left forearm and shoulder, but they were non-life threatening. He has since been released from the hospital after receiving treatment.
According to Ghant, investigators found 12 shell casings at the scene of the crime and most of them were from an assault rifle.
The third victim was shot around 11 p.m. near the intersection of Water Avenue and Race Street while he was walking down the street.
According to Ghant, the 29-year-old heard shots fired in the area and noticed he was grazed by the bullets in multiple areas. Ghant said he had injuries to his left leg and torso, but could not identify what caliber weapon caused the injuries.
Ghant said investigators are trying to determine whether or not these shootings are all related.
“What we’re trying to do is take all of the evidence and try to compare it and see if we can get some information in reference to the evidence,” Ghant said.
