Selma High School graduate Orlando Burks has been inducted into the Miles College Sports Hall of Fame.
Burks was a three-time letterman in football and a two-time letterman in baseball during his time with the Golden Bears from 1990-1993.
“It really didn’t start hitting me until a week before the induction when I started getting calls form everybody and people from the Miles family were just giving me calls and when I realized how excited they were for me, that’s when I started getting excited,” Burks said.
“It was definitely an honor. I was definitely excited.”
Burks transferred to Miles after a year at Marion Military Institute and some time at Alabama State University.
Once at Miles, he starred on the gridiron.
He said he caught 153 passes during his career and 18 touchdowns, but his biggest moment might’ve come in a game that didn’t count.
Burks caught seven touchdowns in the Golden Bears spring game one year, a record he says still stands today.
“A lot of our wide receivers got hurt, so I got more reps than I was supposed to get,” Burks said with a laugh.
He said when he tells his friends that story he often has to call up an old teammate to verify it because nobody believes him.
“When I tell them, they look at me until I have to call some of my buddies,” Burks said.
He also pitched and played right field for the Miles’ baseball team. The induction ceremony was held Oct. 16, during Miles’ homecoming week.
Burks said he still attends all of Miles’ home football games and many of the away contests too. Plus, he keeps up to date on what’s going on in Selma.
He was the captain on the 1986 Selma football team that finished with an 8-3 record, which still stands as the school’s best football season.
Last year, that team was honored during Selma’s game against Bessemer City.
Burks currently serves as the director at the Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center and is the founder of the Steel City Gators AAU basketball team.
