To honor and recognize local veterans, Concordia College Alabama is having a special ceremony Nov. 11.

This will be the first year the college has held a program like this, according to Abby Campbell, director of public relations.

“We just wanted to take the time to recognize the veterans in the community,” Campbell said. “They’ve done such a great service to our country. I think that as Americans we all owe it to at least give them one day just to appreciate them and show our support for them. I think that this is a great way for us to do that and also incorporate our worship service into it.”

Campbell said the event will coincide with the college’s worship service, and later they will offer a free lunch for the veterans.

“We wanted to invite them to worship with us. And then afterwards, we’ll be giving them a free lunch,” Campbell said. “We just wanted to give a little token of our appreciation.”

To go along with thanking the veterans, Concordia will also participate in the Greenlight a Vet campaign by lighting up a building on campus in green for he remainder of the month.

The campaign is a nationwide attempt to show how much veterans mean to people by changing a light to green to show support for the veterans.

“We heard about it, and we felt like lighting up the big white building on our campus would just be a really strong statement in our community,” Campbell said. “That building is kind of a landmark, and it’s very visible. We would just love to have people drive by and see it lit up in green and just kind of encourage the rest of the community to get involved and also show support for the veterans.”

The Veterans Day program will be held at Concordia’s Wright Auditorium.

Originally, the service was scheduled for 11 a.m., but Campbell said they are working to change the time so that Concordia’s program doesn’t interfere with the American Legion’s program, which will be 11 a.m. at Memorial Stadium.

The time will be announced at a later date. Check back on the Times-Journal calendar page for updated information.
