First sign-up day for Sea Coast service Saturday

The first sign-up day for new garbage collection will be Saturday at Meadowview Elementary School. The day will be for people who live in Ward 1, which is represented by Cecil Williamson. The event begins at 8 a.m. and goes through 4 p.m.
Each city council member will sponsor a sign-up day in his or her ward on Saturdays through Jan. 9.
The council voted last month to award garbage collection in the city to Sea Coast Disposal.
“Everybody has to sign up again,” said Mayor George Evans. “It’s a new company, new guidelines.”
Evans also gauged the council’s opinion on hiring a person to work with Sea Coast and the transition.
“At least for one year until we get off the ground — hire a person who knows what they are doing,” Evans said.
This position would work with Sea Coast on all complaints and handle any court or code issues that come up.
“It would behoove us to have someone in the city that can do that,” Evans said.
Councilman Greg Bjelke liked the idea but asked if there was anyone already employed with the city who could help in that role.
Evans said he thought the job needs to be full-time and anyone who is transferred would need to be replaced.
“There’s possibly someone who could take this on, but that position would have to be replaced,” Evans said.
Evans said the city is working on a job description, and he would like to have the position filled by the middle of December.
