More than 450 angels were given out at the Salvation Army’s annual Angels on the Air Tuesday.
With the help of volunteers, nearly 500 of the 653 angels were handed out to members of the community to ensure those children receive presents this Christmas.
“I love the Army. I love this kind of work and I love the angel tree and ringing bells,” said Betty Goodman, a volunteer of the Salvation Army for 66 years. “I just love helping people and the Salvation Army does that.”
Goodman said helping out with the Angel Tree event is special to her, and she wished that she could help even more children than what she has the opportunity to do.
“We’re helping these poor little children that need help,” Goodman said. “My heart just goes out to them. I wish we could just help all of them that needs help.”
Jewel Williamson and Jeff Harrison were also behind the table handing out angels and greeting those passing by.
“It just puts smiles on your face when you see the parents come pick up their bags at the armory when we have our pick up day. It’s just so rewarding knowing that you’ve been a part of making some children just as happy as could be on Christmas morning,” Williamson said. “We know that’s not what Christmas is about, but it just enables us to be able to help them just a little bit to learn what Christmas is about and the love of people and that people care about them and to see those parents. They see us and they find out that we care about them. It just makes them learn to open their hearts.”
The remaining angels will be on trees around the community.
