Four Hornets sign to play college basketball
Dallas County’s Jerrod Moorer, Kendell Motley, Raheem Phillips and Javaris McGuire signed to play college basketball in April. Moorer and Motley signed with Iowa Central, while Phillips went to Vorhees College in South Carolina. McGuire signed at Wallace Community College Selma.
Morgan boys finish second in AISA tennis championship
Morgan Academy’s boys tennis team finished second in the AISA tennis championships in Montgomery April 22. It was Morgan’s fourth straight runner up finish. On the girls’ side, Morgan’s Mary Ashlyn Pearce also won an individual title in the No. 5 singles championship.
Three players, coach named to AHSAA All-Star Game
Keith’s John Pettway and Harriet Winchester and Southside’s Charles Price were named to the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s North-South All-Star Game on April 24. Dallas County boys’ coach Willie Moore also served as a coach for the South.
Jones leads AUM to
back-to-back championships
Cassie Jones threw a shutout to lead Auburn Montgomery past Lindsey Wilson 10-0 in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics national softball championship on May 29. Jones, a graduate of Dallas County High School, threw her 17th career shutout in the game. Dallas County’s Amy Persinger also played on the team. Morgan Academy graduate Hunter Veach was a volunteer assistant coach for AUM.
Harbaugh visits Selma
Michigan head football coach Jim Harbaugh made a surprise visit to Selma on June 5. Harbaugh and members of the Wolverines’ staff walked over the Edmund Pettus Bridge.
Veach named top batter
Morgan Academy’s Kendall Veach was named the AISA’s top hitter by the Alabama Sports Writers Association. She hit for an average of .605 and had 14 home runs and 46 RBIs during her senior year. Veach is currently playing softball at Auburn University.
Dinkins Pool reopens
The Dinkins Pool reopened for the first time since 2013 on June 23. The Edmundite Missions provided more than half the $80,000 needed for the renovations to the pool.
