Statistics show that three out of five people with Alzheimer’s will wander at some point. However, really anyone with memory problems and is able to walk is at risk for wandering.
Even in the early stages of dementia, a person can become disoriented or confused for a period of time.
That’s why we applaud the local Alzheimer’s Outreach Group’s effort to buy a drone for search and rescue. The eyes in the sky could make the difference between life and death for those who wander off. The drone could be especially helpful at night or during periods of bad weather.
It’s also good to keep to keep in mind some risk factors for wandering:
- Returns from a regular walk or drive later than usual
- Tries to fulfill former obligations, such as going to work, or wants to “go home,” even when at home
- Is restless, paces or makes repetitive movements
- Has difficulty locating familiar places or rooms
