Morgan Academy kicked off soccer season Saturday with an alumni game.
The Senators had four former players and several other volunteers team up for a game against the current Senators’ boys team. It was the first time Morgan had its entire team together for a full field scrimmage this year.
“We haven’t had a chance to play a full field game, and this is really our only chance to play anything that resembles a full field game before the season starts,” said Morgan boys soccer coach Jay Minter.
The varsity team started the season on the right foot Saturday by beating the alumni team 6-2. To be fair, the competition will probably get a little tougher Feb. 8 when Morgan opens its season against Macon East. Minter said due to basketball, his team hasn’t had a whole lot of practice time together, but he can already see the talent on the roster.
Four seniors — Diyan Patel, Calvin Oslund, Stacy Russell and Mac Beers — will lead the Senators this year.
“They are my four captains, and they all play right up through the middle,” Minter said. “They are the strength of my team.”
Last season, Morgan followed a 6-8 season with a 2-12 record. This year Minter believes this could be the best team Morgan has had.
Thirteen of the 16 Senators who played last season are back this year. Ten of those players are returning starters.
“If we can stay healthy, we’ve got a chance to have the best team we’ve ever had,” Minter said.
Morgan will play its first six matches at home between Feb. 8 and Feb. 22 before playing seven of its final nine on the road.
“Hopefull,y there will be some good February weather for games here,” Minter said.
When the season kicks off against Macon East on Feb. 8, the boys will play at 5:30 p.m., followed by the girls at 7 p.m.
