The Alabama Wildlife Federation (AWF) is planning a squirrel hunt in memory of David K. Nelson, former wildlife biologist, in mid-February.
The 2016 David K. Nelson Memorial Squirrel Hunt will begin Friday, Feb. 19 at noon and will end Saturday, Feb. 20 at noon with lunch and award presentations.
Registration is $200 per team consisting of four members. Non-hunting assistants such as a dog handler or photographer may accompany the teams for an additional $25 per person. Deadline to register is Monday, Feb. 15.
Dues will go toward the cost of meals, supplies and awards. Remaining funds will benefit the AWF Operation GameWatch reward fund.
Awards will be presented in both youth and adult categories.
The Central Alabama Farmers Coop in Selma is designated as headquarters.
Hunters may hunt anywhere in Alabama where teams can return to headquarters by tally deadlines. Teams are responsible for acquiring their own properties to hunt but can seek suggestions from the hunt committee.
A social for hunters will be held Friday at 6 p.m. at headquarters. The Friday team tally deadline follows shortly after at 6:30 p.m.
The hunt will resume Saturday morning at dawn and will conclude at noon for the final team tally deadline.
Hunters may hunt both or either days.
Using stalk, dogs, shotgun or rifle is at the discretion of each team or team member. Team members may only have one gun, a maximum of four guns per four-member team. Additional team members such as dog handlers or photographers may not have guns or hunt.
