Beginning Saturday, Feb. 26 at 12:01 a.m. and ending the night of Sunday, Feb. 28 at midnight, citizens of Selma-Dallas County can purchase select items without a sales tax.
As a part of Alabama’s 2016 Severe Weather Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday, Selma and Dallas County will offer select items free of sales tax to allow citizens to stock up on items that could protect them in case of severe weather.
“I highly encourage the public to get out, to take advantage of the great deals they can receive. Items that they will need in the future to help them prepare for the upcoming weather that we may expect in the next few months,” said Toya Stiles, director of Dallas County Homeland Security and Emergency Management.
According to Act. No. 2012-256, some of the items will be exempt from sales tax from Feb. 26-28 include: batteries, cell phone battery or charger, radio, flashlight, plastic sheeting, rope, non-electric can-opener, artificial ice, first aid kit, fire extinguisher, gas or diesel fuel tank and any portable generator.
This is the fifth year Alabama has had a weekend to allow its citizens to stock up on items without sales tax.
As the months that usually bring severe weather approach, Stiles encourages households to make sure they always have a three-day supply of water and perishable food.
“If they do not have one, they should try to get a safety plan in place,” Stiles said.
