The Selma Parks and Recreation Department and All in Sports Outreach are hosting a free baseball camp Saturday at the Sportsplex.

The camp is open to kids ages 7-12. The children will be divided into three age groups: 7-8, 9-10 and 11-12. City of Selma baseball director Jamie Tellier said he expects at least 25 to 30 kids in each age group to show up for the camp.

“We’ll probably go into a lot more detail with those two older groups, especially when it comes to fielding and probably base-running,” Tellier said.

The camp will last an hour and a half for each age group. For 7 and 8 year-olds, the camp runs from 9 – 10 a.m. For 9 and 10 year-olds, the camp lasts from 10:30 a.m. – noon. The 11 and 12 year-olds will have their camp from noon – 1:30 p.m.

With the youth baseball season just around the corner, Tellier said he hopes the baseball camp will give new players fundamental lessons of baseball so they are not starting from scratch when the season begins.

“We’re going to go over some fundamentals and hopefully, this will be the beginning of learning a lot about baseball,” Tellier said. I hope that when they leave the camp, they’ll already be ready for when the season comes so their coaches won’t have to go back over and start from scratch with them.”

There will be a table at the camp for the city of Selma’s youth baseball league. A $10 fee and a form of identification is required to register.

Registration for the baseball camp opens at 8 a.m. at the Sportsplex for all age groups. Tellier said he encourages all kids who want to participate to preregister before Saturday at www.allinsportsoutreach.org.

On Saturday, Feb. 27, there will be a softball camp at the Complex.
