OXFORD — Meadowview Christian’s basketball season ended Friday night in the Alabama Christian Athletic Association semifinals.
The Trojans’ boys led Union Chapel by six after the first quarter and looked like they might be ready to upset the two-time defending champions. Instead, that all changed quickly when primary ball handler Justin McGuire got into foul trouble.
Union Chapel went on a big run and led the rest of the way in an 86-71 victory.
“Regardless of the score, it doesn’t change how proud I am,” said Meadowview head coach John Robert Morton. “We’ve really come a long way since the first few games of the season.”
The Trojans were chasing the first basketball championship in school history and ended up only two victories away from making that a reality.
Jevar McGuire scored 22 points to lead Meadowview. Sam Dabit scored 16 points for the Trojans and Justin chipped in 15.
Meadowview led 16-10 at the end of the first quarter, but Union Chapel led 39-24 at halftime. Morton said the entire game changed when Justin got into foul trouble.
“When I lose Justin I lose my best ball handler and my most athletic kid on the court,” Morton said.
“It’s just hard to keep up.”
The tournament is being played at the Oxford Civic Center.
