The start of the city of Selma’s baseball and softball season is still a few weeks away, but many of the league’s players are more prepared after Saturday.
Selma’s Parks and Recreation Department and All in Sports Outreach, Inc. partnered to host a free baseball camp Saturday, geared toward getting players and coaches ready for the upcoming season.
“We tried to get as many cuts and swings as we can,” said Bob Frazer with All in Sports. “It’s the first swings of the year for many of them. A couple of them had never played before, so trying to get them to learn how to hold the bat.”
The camp was broken down by age group. There were about 40 7-and 8-year-old’s that took part in the first portion of the camp and another 25 9-and-10 year olds. Another group, featuring 11-and-12 year olds, were also slated to work in the afternoon.
Players were taught base running, hitting, fielding and throwing in an effort to get them up to speed before games get underway.
“It’s just a good starter to the season to help the kids get better,” Frazer said.
All in Sports Outreach is a nonprofit organization with a mission to share the message of Jesus Christ and promote unity and racial reconciliation through sports.
Frazier said they shared a message about trusting the Lord from Proverbs 3-5:6.
“It was more for the parents that we’ve got to take that back view of our kid and trust the Lord’s view of our kid and not try to make our kids the next major leaguers,” Frazer said.
The city and All in Sports Outreach will hold a free softball camp Saturday, Feb. 27 at the Complex.
