The Keith girls and boys have weathered the storm from eight teams remaining in the class 1A tournament to five, and they didn’t have to do a thing.
With Keith’s games being the only class 1A games cancelled due to inclement weather, both the girls and boys already know the three teams that await them in Birmingham if they win their rescheduled regional final games.
If the Keith girls defeat Loachapoka Thursday, they will have a rematch of the 2015 class 1A state championship in their first game in Birmingham. Spring Garden awaits the winner of Keith and Loachapoka after beating Winterboro 47-35 in the regional final.
The other two girls teams that have punched their tickets to Birmingham are Decatur Heritage, who beat R.A. Hubbard 64-53 in the regional final, and Linden, who defeated J.F. Shields 54-36 to advance.
If the Keith boys win against Cornerstone Christian Thursday, they will face Sacred Heart Catholic in the first round of the state tournament in Birmingham. Sacred Heart has scored 108, 94 and 96 points in each of its last postseason games, with a 96-54 win over Winterboro in its most recent game.
Marion County and Georgiana are the other two boys’ teams joining Sacred Heart and the winner of Keith-Cornerstone in Birmingham. Marion County beat Decatur Heritage 64-53 to advance to the state tournament and Georgiana ended A.L. Johnson’s run with a 69-48 victory.
