Stay patient with road closures this weekend

On Thursday, thousands of visitors will travel into Selma to take part in this year’s Bridge Crossing Jubilee.
The incoming traffic means that it’ll be more difficult to maneuver around town and some areas will be completely impassable.
The Selma Police Department has every officer scheduled to work this weekend and will spend an estimated $20,000 in overtime this year, according to chief John Brock.
Many roads will be closed for short periods of time this weekend. On Thursday, Washington Street will be closed from 3:30 p.m.-8 p.m. outside the Carl Morgan Convention Center for the city of Selma’s welcome reception.
On Friday, the Edmund Pettus Bridge will be closed from noon until 1 p.m. for a children’s march. On Saturday, portions of Broad Street, Alabama Avenue and Washington Street will close for the Jubilee Parade, which starts at 9 a.m.
On Sunday, the Edmund Pettus Bridge will be closed from 1 p.m. until 6 p.m. for the Bridge Crossing Jubilee.
We ask that everyone express patience this weekend with all the visitors coming into town. The road closures are a small headache to bare for a week that means so much for our city’s tourism and history.
It’ll be a busy weekend for everyone, so plan ahead.
