A man was shot in a failed attempt to rob a woman Monday evening at the Wells Fargo bank ATM on Citizen’s Parkway.
Lt. Sam Miller of the Selma Police Department said a woman was withdrawing cash from the ATM Monday between 10 and 10:30 p.m. when she was approached by a man at gunpoint.
When the woman failed to surrender her money, the robber began waving his gun in her face.
Authorities said the victim’s grandson then withdrew a weapon and exited the vehicle. The robber then opened fire at the victim’s grandson.
“The grandson returns fire as the guy was running away shooting back at him. The robber fell to the ground and then took off running again,” Miller said.
Miller said later that night the Prattville Police Department called, reporting of a gunshot victim at a hospital.
“The would-be robber made it home and got his mother to drive him to the hospital because he was shot in the lower back,” Miller said.
The suspect is currently being treated at Baptist South in Montgomery.
Police Chief John Brock said the robber has multiple outstanding warrants from other agencies.
“We’re going to have to figure out who’s going to get what then,” Miller said. “But we will file charges when he’s released.”
The man’s identity was not released pending formal charges.
