Safe Harbor offering free ultrasounds

The Safe Harbor Women’s Medical Clinic is offering free ultrasounds for expecting mothers.
Safe Harbor executive director Jennifer Dobbs said the ultrasounds are helpful during times of financial hardship.
“We’re trying to get as many people as we can to come in. These are limited ultrasounds. They are non-diagnostic. We’re just showing mothers and couples their baby, and they can get pictures. We don’t do gender reveal,” Dobbs said.
Safe Harbor has offered ultrasounds to the community for years between two locations.
She said Ultrasound Technician Laura Stover is working to train registered nurses who volunteer at the clinic on how to perform ultrasounds.
“If she is out, we want to be able to still offer ultrasounds. We needed someone besides her so we decided to train some RNs,” Dobbs said.
Stover said the clinic is a great help to many women of Selma and surrounding areas.
“I feel like this is a great service to the community. There are certain measurements of the baby that we take to show mothers how far along they are and their due date. They get to listen to their baby’s heartbeats as well,” Stover said.
She said the RNs are learning a lot and have shown progress since the beginning of training to now.
Stover said the training helps a lot with her workload since she is the only person who can perform ultrasounds right now.
“If I was out of the office and we had someone to come in who was abortion-minded, we have other people here who would be able to offer them an ultrasound and help them make a better educated decision on what to do,” Stover said.
The clinic is located at 408 Dallas Ave. and caters to pregnant women through offers of parenting and nutrition classes, counseling and pregnancy testing. Patients can come in from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Tuesdays to get the ultrasounds.
To receive the free ultrasound, women must be between six to 18 weeks pregnant.
