The Selma Recreation Department is gearing up for a summer schedule that will include plenty of activities for youth in the Selma area.
The department is bringing back its tennis program, will re-open the Dinkins Pool and playgrounds and gymnasiums around the county will be available for children to play on.
“A lot of people say there is nothing to do in Selma, but there really is if you look for it and you don’t even have to really look for it,” said interim recreation director Lebo Jones.
“There’s plenty to do for the kids in the summertime.”
The Dinkins Pool, which reopened in June after being closed for two years, will be open starting June 1.
The cost is 50 cents per session, and the sessions run from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. until 6 p.m.
The pool is located at the intersection of Division Street and Dexter Avenue and was completely renovated last year.
The recreation department’s summer tennis program will also start June 1. The program is expected to operate as it has in past years, when it was held from 5:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays and 8 – 10 a.m. on Saturdays.
During the summer, school playgrounds and gymnasiums will also be opened up, so that children have a place to spend their days. The complete list of times and days each would be open was not available as of Thursday.
Registration for the department’s T-ball league will be held June 1 from 9 a.m. until noon at the Complex.
The T-ball league is for 3-year-olds and 4-year-olds. For those who don’t make registration on June 1, additional days to register may be available.
The East Selma Fish Pond is also back open and will remain open throughout the summer. The pond is open from 7 a.m. until noon on Tuesdays, from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. on Thursdays and from 7 a.m. until noon on Saturdays.
