Ellwood Christian Academy could have a new football coach next season.
The contract of head coach Trey Pike expired in May and has not been renewed, according to the Rev. Gary Crum, who is the board chairman for Ellwood. Crum said Pike was on a one-year contract after accepting the position in August 2015 and that his contract has not been renewed while Ellwood checks its enrollment numbers.
“It’s all going to depend on enrollment,” Crum said. “I just put the new hires on hold until we see what enrollment is going to look like.”
In the meantime, Ellwood athletic director Darrell Walker is serving as the school’s interim football coach.
When asked if Pike could be back next year, Crum said “could be.”
“We are sort of in a waiting pattern now,” Crum said. “… That’s the unfortunate thing about private schools is you just don’t have a hand on your numbers until you can get a better feel of what’s going on.”
Crum said in a couple of weeks the school will know more about its enrollment for the upcoming year. He said Ellwood had 310 students when the school year ended in May of last year.
He said that number was close to what the school had in previous years.
“It looks like we’ve done a flip. It used to be where middle and high school outnumbered elementary but now it looks elementary numbers are equal or edging the high school numbers,” Crum said.
Crum said others also had their contracts expire, but he would not say how many.
Pike was in his first year as Ellwood Christian’s football coach last season and led the team to a 3-7 record. The Eagles won their first three games, but lost seven in a row to end the season.
