The voice of the University of Alabama’s football team is coming to Selma.
Eli Gold, who has served as the radio play-by-play voice of the Crimson Tide since 1998, will speak at Dallas Wilcox Bama Club event Aug. 8 at the Carl C. Morgan Convention Center.
“He’s a lot of fun and obviously very knowledgeable,” said Ronnie Leet, who serves as the Dallas Wilcox Bama Club’s president. “He’ll let us know what’s going on with the football program.”
Leet said it’ll be the third time Gold has talked at a Dallas Wilcox Bama Club event.
Gold has had an extensive career in the sports broadcasting spectrum. He still hosts a show named “NASCAR Live” on the Motor Racing Network and has since 1982. He also formerly called Arena Football League games on TNN and NBC and currently calls college football and NFL games for Sports USA Radio Network.
Although he has many different roles, Gold is best known to Alabamians as the voice of the University of Alabama’s football team. He’s called five Alabama national championship runs in his career.
In 2013, Gold was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame.
“He’s a great speaker and he’s a lot of fun and a lot of energy,” Leet said. “Everybody likes hearing him.”
The event will start at 6:15 p.m., but advanced registration is required by Aug. 3 The cost is $30 per person for Bama Club members and $35 per person for non-Bama Club members. To register, send check or cash to P.O. Box 2395, Selma, AL 36702. For more information, contact Leet at 875-2672.
Leet said limited seating is available.
The Dallas Wilcox Bama Club is also currently selling tickets for its annual Alabama football ticket raffle. The tickets are $20 per ticket and only 300 tickets will be sold.
All proceeds from the ticket raffle will go toward the Bama Club’s scholarship fund. Last year, the Bama Club handed out $22,500 in scholarships to 10 students attending the University of Alabama.
The winner of the raffle will receive two tickets to all of Alabama’s home football games this season, two pre-game meals at the Culverhouse College of Commerce and a reserved parking pass.
Alabama was picked by the media last week as the favorite to win the SEC and the Crimson Tide are likely to be ranked in the top five of both major preseason polls. Alabama’s home schedule this year includes SEC games against Auburn, Mississippi State, Texas A&M, Kentucky and non-conference games against Kent State, Western Kentucky and Chattanooga.
All Bama Club committee members have tickets, but Leet can also be contacted at 875-2672.
The drawing for the tickets will take place in early September and will be broadcast on Dixie Country 100.1 radio station.
