Morgan hosts Southern in scrimmage Friday night

Next week, Morgan Academy will try to do what no team has been able to do since 2010 — beat Edgewood Academy.
This week the challenge is much simpler — line up correctly, don’t commit too many penalties and work out the kinks before the regular season gets underway next week.
The Senators will host Southern Academy Friday night in a scrimmage game at 7 p.m. Admission will be free as Senators’ fans get their first live look at this year’s team, led by first year head coach Josh Thacker.
“A scrimmage is one of those things where you hope you align correctly defensively and do all your assignments on offense,” Thacker said. “You just hope you can execute. You’re not really worried about executing at a high level. You’re just worried about getting everybody in the right place, getting everybody on the same page.”
The scrimmage will include referees and will be four quarters long, like a normal game.
The first two quarters will be standard football.
After a vanilla first half where the players can get their feet wet, the third quarter will allow blitzes. The teams may also do two-minute offensive drills at some point during the game.
The fourth quarter will be played by each side’s junior varsity. Any special teams will be not be live.
“It’s more about our guys more than anything,” Thacker said. “They are tired of hitting each other, tired of seeing nobody in the stands, practicing by themselves. It gives them a chance to put their talent on showcase. They’ve worked hard for it all summer.”
Thacker said the team will cycle through group A and then group B during the scrimmage. He said there is no set depth chart or starting lineup at this point.
“The goal tomorrow is to get everybody playing time, hopefully keep everybody healthy and get the ship righted for Edgewood,” Thacker said.
