Lightening in the area delayed the start of the Meadowview Christian School football season as the Trojans hosted the Victory Christian Academy Eagles from Columbus, Miss. and came out on the losing end, 34-0.
The Trojans, who will compete in a 6-man football league, stepped up to play 8-man against the Eagles, with size and experience being factors head coach Lebo Jones said challenged them all night.
“We’re a young team, we’ve been talking about that for a while,” Jones said. “We played good the first couple of possessions but we had a few fumbled snaps that killed us. But at the end of the day, they were just bigger and stronger than we were.”
The Eagles struck with five minutes left in the first quarter off an inside handoff that gained 81-yards for a touchdown. The 2-point conversion was good giving the Eagles an 8-0 lead, and all the points they would need on the night.
The Eagles scored three more times in the second quarter off big plays as Meadowview couldn’t mount a serious drive in the first half.
“We’ve just got to get a lot better on the offensive line,” Jones said. “Our blocking was bad tonight and our tackling was bad. If you can’t block and tackle you don’t have much chance to win.”
As the rain fell in the second half the Trojans’ defense was able to hold the Eagles to only one score.
Jones singled out Jeremy Lee at quarterback and Zack Duke at running back on offense as good performers on the night, and John Ryan Symanski on defense.
The Trojans’ next game is at Clay County and they won’t return to play a home game at Wasden Field until October 7.
