Morgan dominates Edgewood to end 71 game win streak

The nation’s longest high school football winning streak ended Friday night in a big way.
Morgan Academy hammered Edgewood Academy 46-0 and in the process ended the Wildcats’ 71-game winning streak that dated back to 2010. It was the longest 11-man high school football win streak in the country and the longest in the state of Alabama’s history.
“I’m just really excited for our guys and our community. Football is just football at the end of the day and there’s always going to be a winner and a loser,” said Morgan Academy coach Josh Thacker, who was coaching his first game for the Senators.“Obviously, Edgewood came out on the good side of that 71 times and tonight it was us.”
The game was played at Faulkner University and the Seantors controlled it from the start.
Gunnar Henderson threw a 48-yard touchdown pass to Landon Davis on the first play of the game to give the Senators a quick 7-0 lead.
Henderson later added touchdowns on runs of 6 yards and 5 yards. All in all 10 Senators ran the football during Friday’s game.
It was one of the those nights where everything was working for the Senators.
Peyton Egbert ran for a 2-yard touchdown run and Ed Williams had a 3-yard touchdown run. Sam Brackin scored on a 62-yard punt return and Will Whiddon blocked a punt. Egbert and Henderson combined to go 3-for-3 passing for 68 yards, including Henderson’s touchdown pass.
“The triple option worked real good tonight. This is week two for us because we had a jamboree. It worked well there and it worked well again tonight,” Thacker said.
All in all, Morgan ran it 20 times for 151 yards and five touchdowns.
Thacker said as the game went on, Morgan’s players gained confidence.
Edgewood had defeated the Senators 68-18 and 69-14 the last two seasons, but the Wildcats are clearly not the same team in 2016.
Longtime coach Bobby Carr left in the offseason and Edgewood was low in numbers compared to previous seasons.
“I got to speak to Edgewood’s team after the game. I told those guys in front of our guys that’s it got to be tough on kids. So many adults put so much pressure on these young men to carry on a streak and that’s not what it’s about,” Thacker said.
“It’s about Edgewood and their guys and Morgan Academy kids coming together and working hard all summer and playing a great football game.”
It doesn’t get any easier for Morgan Academy next week.
The Senators will play at Marengo Academy, a team that has played in three consecutive state championship games.
