Shuck ‘n’ Jive, Raft Race offer Labor Day fun

There won’t be fireworks, but there will be plenty to do throughout the Labor Day weekend in Selma.
The Blackbelt Benefit Group will host Shuck ‘n’ Jive at the Old Depot Museum on Thursday at 6 p.m., featuring musician Paul Linden, whose has family in Selma.
“We get a little more diverse crowd and a pretty good sized crowd usually,” said Clay Carmichael with the Blackbelt Benefit Group.
Linden’s performance will likely draw a large crowd in its own right. Although he doesn’t have specific Selma roots, his mother Shannon said many will come out to see him play, including several family members.
“He is flying in from Indianapolis on Thursday and the band he put together is coming in,” Shannon said. “I’m just real excited.”
The fun continues Monday with the Alabama River Raft Race at 9 a.m. This year homemade floats will not be allowed in the race, but Carmichael is still planning for a big turnout.
“We lost a lot of enthusiasm with not being able to do the home made rafts,” Carmichael said. “That hit some people hard. People had been working on their rafts and we were expecting to probably almost double our homemade rafts this year. That’s kind of the draw to that event and it’s unfortunate that we can’t do it, but hopefully we will be able to next year.”
This year’s race will include manufactured canoes, kayaks and river tubes.
After the race, John Bull and Robert Bubba Hall will entertain with music at The Sandbar.
The final meeting before the race is Tuesday at The Sand Bar at 5 p.m. For more information, contact Victor Shaw at victormshaw@yahoo.com.
Mayor George Evans’ office confirmed Monday that there would be no fireworks show this year on Labor Day.
Over the last few years, the city held its fireworks show on Labor Day, but Selma had a show on the Fourth of July in 2016.
