Not all three set losses are created equally.

Morgan Academy (5-5) proved how factual that statement is Thursday in a 29-27, 25-23, 25-22 loss to Clarke Prep, where every game came down to a few crucial points. Unfortunately for the Senators, the ball didn’t bounce their way when it mattered the most.

“I’m trying to teach my girls to go from being mediocre to being winners,” said Morgan Academy coach Kayla Mason. “When it comes crunch time, when we need those three points and they can’t gain any more, you have to bring 150 percent.”

The Senators had their chances throughout the match.

Morgan led 24-22 in the first set but Clarke Prep kept fighting. Jordan Powell’s ace tied the match at 24-24 for the Gators.

The teams traded points until a kill by Clarke’s Jonnah Rager gave the Gators a one point lead. On the next play, a return by Morgan went long, giving Clarke the first set win.

The second set followed a similar script. Morgan fought back from a 22-20 deficit thanks to a kill by MzKenzie Williams that landed on the line and tied the set. Clarke Prep won the sets final two points on aces by Jami Allen to win the set 25-23.

In the third set, Morgan jumped out to a 10-1 lead. The Senators were led by a hot start by Williams, who had ace after ace to get Morgan out front.

Clarke Prep fought back to win 10 of the next 11 points to tie the match.

A kill by Clarke Prep’s Jordan Powell and an ace by Shelby Mendenhall put Clarke Prep up 13-11.

“You’ve got to take that 10-1 and keep running with it,” Mason said.

“You can’t let them come back. That set should’ve been won. The first part of it sets the tempo for the game. You can’t slow up, you can’t rest, not in this game because there has to be somebody to 25. It’s not like most other sports where you’re playing with a clock.”

Morgan fought back again to lead 18-15 after Clarke Prep was called for a lift and then a hit into the next.

The Gators won the next three points to square the set up again.

With a chance to seal the deal, Clarke Prep finished off the Senators. Clarke’s Tayla Wood had an ace and Powell had a kill to put the finishing touches on a three set sweep.
