Integrity Worldwide’s annual Run for Kenya is just over a month away, but registration has already started.
The race, which includes a 10K, 5K and 1-mile fun run, will be held on Oct. 8 in downtown Selma. Registration will continue through race day, but must be completed by Sept. 24 to ensure receiving a T-shirt.
The race has been voted the Chamber of Commerce’s Selma/Dallas County Event of the Year the last two years.
“It has far exceeded it what we thought it would be,” said Averee Hicks, a co-founder of Integrity Worldwide. “It has become an event. It started out as just a race, a 5K and a 1-mile and now it’s really more of an event and a happening in downtown Selma. A lot of people just come out and hang around that aren’t even running.”
Proceeds from the race will go toward Integrity Worldwide’s latest project in Meto, Kenya. The nonprofit is in the process of constructing a medical complex in Meto.
The clinic will be named the IntegrityHelp Medical and Dental Clinic.
“It’s very different from just signing up to run in a race,” Hicks said. “People are investing in the lives of the Massi that live in Meto, Kenya and surrounding villages of a permanent source of a of ongoing healthcare. It’s a very substantial thing we are doing this year.”
Hicks said they’ve already broken ground on the clinic, which she hopes will be finished by summer 2017.
Integrity just returned from a trip to Meto in August where the group saw the ground breaking of the clinic and also held the Kenya’s Run For Selma, where more than 500 people took part.
Students in Kenya signed up by writing a prayer or blessing on the back of their registration form for Selma.
“We’ll have done two races in two continents in a little over eight weeks,” Hicks said.
This year’s Run for Kenya will also include vendors and music. The title sponsor of the race is Children’s Dentistry of Central Alabama.
Registration packets will be available for pickup at Arsenal Place Accelerator the Friday before the race, so that anyone that is already signed up can get their information and race bib and avoid the long lines on race day.
Registration will take place from 7:30 a.m. until 8:45 a.m. on race day. Registration is $25 per person, but there is a $5 increase for registration on race day and a T-shirt is not guaranteed.
