Former Trojans coach talks Iron Bowl at QB Club

Former Troy University coach Larry Blakeney was the guest speaker at the Selma Quarterback Club meeting Monday night at the Selma Convention Center.
Blakeney was the head coach at Troy for 24 years, compiling a 178-113-1 record. He retired from coaching in 2014 and is in the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame.
Before accepting the head coaching job at Troy, Blakeney was an assistant at Auburn University for 14 years. On Monday night, when he finished speaking and opened the floor up for questions, he was asked what the biggest game he ever coached in at Auburn was.
He didn’t hesitate.
“No question, ‘89, Alabama in Auburn,” Blakeney said.
That was the first time Alabama had ever played in Auburn for the Iron Bowl and Tigers’ fans still remember it as one of the biggest wins in the rivalry’s history. Auburn won 30-20 to clinch the SEC Championship and ended undefeated and No. 2 Alabama’s national championship hopes.
“We had guys hyperventilating on Friday going through the Tiger Walk. Thousands of people were standing there. The next day you couldn’t get through the Tiger Walk,” Blakeney said. “That was a special time for Auburn.”
Blakeney also received questions about his time in Troy. Not surprisingly, he said nine time NFL Pro-Bowler DeMarcus Ware was the best player he coached while at at the school, but he coached several other future NFL stars too. Troy players Lawrence Tynes and Osi Umenyiora went on to win Super Bowls with the New York Giants. Ware won a Super Bowl with the Denver Broncos last year.
“Those are some pretty good players,” Blakeney said.
Blakeney was also asked why Troy doesn’t play games against Alabama and Auburn.
“They will not play Troy, period,” Blakeney said.
“Alabama won’t and Auburn won’t. They will not play us. They will play everybody in the Sun Belt … but they will not play Troy.”
Next week the Selma Quarterback Club will host former Mississippi head coach Houston Nutt, who is now a college football analyst for CBS Sports.
