After sluggish start, MCS rolls to three set victory

Ten minutes into Tuesday’s match, Meadowview Christian volleyball coach Tim Burton threw his hands up in frustration. The Trojans weren’t communicating, weren’t playing good volleyball and as a result had fallen behind 15-5.
“I told them I give up. I told them I’m through,” Burton said. “I told them they needed to find another coach or learn how to play volleyball.”
Burton usually leaves his coaching for practice. His philosophy is that game day is to show off what you’ve learned and practice is for fine-tuning, but at the beginning of Tuesday’s match, he didn’t like what he saw.
“I told them I’ve taught them everything I know, but you refuse to do it,” Burton said.
He must’ve gotten his point across. The Trojans rallied to win the first set 25-23 and then rolled past Chilton Christian 25-17 and 25-13 to sweep Tuesday’s match.
“They come back nice. I was impressed with their play to finish that first game and to come back and play like they did in that second two,” Burton said. “I was proud of the way they played.”
Chilton made it interesting with its start to the match.
The Patriots led 15-5 and appeared in control of the first game, when Mallory Freine went back to serve. Freine had a kill at the net to pull the Trojans within nine and then had three aces over the next five points.
Erin McIntyre had a winner at the net to pull the Trojans within 16-11. An ace by Alyssa Verhoff pulled Meadowview within 19-14 and later perfectly placed tip at the net by Reagan Burton pulled the Trojans within 19-17.
Chilton won the next two points but Meadowview ran off four consecutive to tie the set at 21-21.
The teams swapped points on unforced errors to keep the score tied.
Freine served for a point to put Meadowview up 23-22, the Trojans first lead the entire set. On the next play, she stepped away from a ball on the line when someone nearby yelled “out”, only to watch the ball land inbounds.
With the score tied, Chilton hit a return shot into the net and then hit another return out of bounds, giving Meadowview the first set.
Fortunately for the Trojans, most of the drama was in the first game.
The Trojans found themselves in a 6-6 tie in the second set, but ran off 10 straight points. Sara Tepper’s serving played a big role in that 10-0 run.
Chilton managed to get within 21-15, but Verhoff hit a perfect return that landed on the inbounds line to swing the momentum back Meadowview’s way.
The final set was never close. The Trojans jumped out to a 19-5 lead and didn’t look back.
The Meadowview junior varsity (6-0) also won on Tuesday. The Trojans are undefeated on the season.
“I think I’ve got a lot good talent on there,” Burton said of the junior varsity. “They still aren’t playing where I want them to, but I have some good talent on that JV squad.”
Both Meadowview Christian teams play at Harvest Christian on Thursday night.
