The second of three inmates that escaped from the Dallas County Jail last week has been recaptured.
Michael Christian, 46, was captured Thursday night near County Road 83 and County Road 88 in Autauga County, according to Sgt. John Hatfield with the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department.
Hatfield said sheriff’s deputies got a call from Norfolk Southern, saying someone saw a white male and black male walking down the railroad tracks in Autauga County. Hatfield said after receiving that call, they went to the community and found eye witnesses that positively identified those two individuals as Christian and Derrick Washington Jr., 19, who is still at large.
The Autauga County Sheriff’s Department, the state K9unit and the railroad police provided assistance. Christian was apprehended about 7:30 p.m. but the search continued for four or five hours for Washington.
“We believe Mr. Washington went into a swampy area, and we lost track of him at that point,” Hatfield said.
Christian, Washington and Jeremy Swann all escaped the Dallas County Jail on Sept. 9 by throwing a liquid mixture into a guard’s face and then overpowering them and taking their keys.
Swann was recaptured in the Burnsville area on the railroad tracks. Capt. Mike Granthum said last week that he was unable to keep up with the other escapees and was probably left behind.
Chief Deputy Randy Pugh said Washington Jr. and Christian asked someone for a ride on Thursday before they were arrested. Pugh said based on the information they know, Washington Jr. has stayed in the general area since his escape.
“We are doing patrols in that area, but if he pops out and sees one of our guys he’s not going to come out,” Pugh said. “Please tell everyone to be very cautious and not to assist him in any way.”
Pugh said the escapees had articles of clothing on them and a knife, so either someone is helping them or they’ve stolen them.
Christian escaped from the county jail twice in late 2014 by climbing through the jail’s ceiling and dropping into unsecured areas. After the first escape, he had his trustee status revoked and was put on a higher security level. Christian is in the jail for rape, sodomy, burglary, theft and the additional two escape charges.
Swann was arrested in August 2014 along with his wife Amanda Swann and charged with the repeated rape of an underage female. He was also charged with escape first and assault second after being recaptured.
Washington was arrested in June 2015 and charged with attempted murder in the assault of a Selma man that was stomped in the head so severely his jaw had to be wired shut.
A cash reward up to $500 is being offered for information by Crime Stoppers. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-866-44-Crime or the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department at 874-2530.
