The third of three inmates that escaped from the Dallas County Jail on Sept. 9 has been captured, according to Sgt. John Hatfield with the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department.
Derrick Washington Jr., 19, was arrested following a traffic stop Friday on Broad Street in Selma around 8:30 p.m.
“Once the other one was taken into custody, just him being out in a wooded area by himself, we believe he followed the railroad tracks back to town,” Hatfield said.
Hatfield said Washington had no weapons on him when he was captured. Hatfield said Washington told deputies he sold some stuff to try to get enough money to get out of town, but was unable to get enough.
Christian was caught Thursday night in Autauga County after being spotted on the railroad tracks. Washington Jr. was also seen in the area that day, but police believe he found a swampy area and managed to get away.
Washington, Christian and Jeremy Swann escaped the jail just over a week ago by throwing a liquid mixture into a guard’s face and then taking the keys.
Swann was captured on Sept. 10 on the railroad tracks in the Burnsville area. Deputies believe he wasn’t able to keep up with Washington Jr. and Christian and was left behind.
Hatfield said other crimes might also be reported in connection to the escapees.
“We have reason to believe they broke into several hunting camps to be able to survive as long as they did,” Hatfield said.
Christian escaped from the county jail twice in late 2014 by climbing through the jail’s ceiling and dropping into unsecured areas. After the first escape, he had his trustee status revoked and was put on a higher security level. Christian is in the jail for rape, sodomy, burglary, theft and the additional two escape charges.
Swann was arrested in August 2014 along with his wife Amanda Swann and charged with the repeated rape of an underage female. He was also charged with escape first and assault second after being recaptured.
Washington Jr. was arrested in June 2015 and charged with attempted murder in the assault of a Selma man that was stomped in the head so severely his jaw had to be wired shut.
