PLANTERSVILLE — Maplesville (4-0) showed Friday that the Red Devils can dominate against teams much higher in classification.

The 1A Red Devils, who entered ranked No. 1 in the state, took it to 5A Dallas County (2-3) on Friday night in a 52-14 victory. Maplesville running back Terence Dunlap put on a show, running for 276 yards in three quarters and scoring three touchdowns. Maplesville had 597 yards of total offense and had six rushing touchdowns as a team.

“We got our butt whooped and we’ve got to get back to the basics and get better,” said Dallas County coach Marty Smith.

Dunlap scored on touchdown runs of 3, 17 and 30 yards in the first half as Maplesville jumped out to a 39-14 halftime lead.

Maplesville head coach Brent Hubbert said his team looked at Friday night as a challenge, considering the Hornets had a large advantage in the number of players on each team.

“We were outnumbered, depth wise and it was a challenge for our kids. I like the way they responded,” Hubbert said.

Dunlap started the scoring with a 3-yard touchdown drive with 9:18 left in the first quarter, but Dallas County answered with its best drive of the night. The Hornets drove 45 yards on seven plays, capped by a 16-yard touchdown run by Calvin Starks.

Starks broke several tackles on the play and dove into the end zone to tie the game. Paul Daniels extra point gave the Hornets their first and only lead of the night.

After a failed onside kick attempt by Dallas County, Maplesville started its next drive on its own 48-yard line.

Dunlap picked up 44 yards on the first two plays, setting up a 1- yard quarterback sneak by Thomas Schoener to put Maplesville up 12-7.

The next two Maplesville drives ended in Dunlap touchdown runs, giving the Red Devils a 25-7 lead with 8:52 left in the second quarter.

On its next drive, Dallas County drove 65 yards on six plays to pull within 25-14. Hornets’ quarterback Octavious Palmer threw a 52-yard pass to Darrell Moorer to set up a 5-yard touchdown run by Starks on the drive.

The final two drives of the half is where the game got away from Dallas County.

Nathaniel Watson ran 40 yards on a quarterback draw to put the Red Devils up 31-14 and the Hornets were unable to move the ball on their next drive.

Maplesville drove 85 yards in 42 seconds to add one more score before the half. Schoener hit Watson for a 55-yard score to give the Red Devils a 39-14 advantage at the break.

In the second half, Maplesville kept rolling.

Schoener accounted for both of the Red Devils touchdowns in the third quarter. He threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Watson and then ran around left end for a 39-yard touchdown.

Neither team scored in the fourth quarter.

Although the game wasn’t close, there was a lot of excitement surrounding Friday night’s game.

Fans filled both sides of the stands to see Maplesville and Dallas County play for the first time since 2005.

“I’m very happy with the positive vibe that was here tonight,” Smith said.

The Hornets can’t afford to let Friday night’s loss linger. They play at Demopolis next Friday in a game they have to win if they hope to win class 5A, region 3.

Maplesville will host Northview, Florida next week.
