Sav-A-Life Bass Tournament to be held Saturday

Selma-Dallas County Sav-A-Life, which supports families who face pregnancy related problems, will hold one of its biggest annual fundraisers on Saturday.
The agency will hold its annual bass fishing tournament Saturday, with a weigh-in scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Selma Marina.
“Without this fundraiser, we would not be able to exist,” said Jennifer Dobbs, executive director of Sav-A-Life. “We don’t make enough money from monthly donors to sustain us. We don’t make enough money from the other fundraisers by themselves, so without this fundraiser we would not be able to exist.”
In past years, the tournament has helped pay for Sav-A-Life, or Safe Harbor Women’s Clinic, to purchase an ultrasound machine and to move into its current location at 408 Dallas Avenue.
Steve Craig, executive director of the tournament, said Saturday’s tournament will raise “in the neighborhood of $10,000” for Sav-A-Life.
“We’ve got between 120 and 130 businesses on the back of our entry form,” Craig said. “It’s unreal at the businesses that have taken part in this thing every year and every year we get a few new ones.”
Sav-A-Life is busier than ever this year. Dobbs said the pregnancy center has tripled in clients this year, with more than 300 people already visiting in 2016.
The clinic offers free pregnancy testing, ultrasounds and counseling.
“We’d like to offer some other services but right now our expenses have tripled on top of all that,” Dobbs said.
The tournament will have three launch points this year — Swift Creek, Roland Cooper State Park and the Selma Marina. Dobbs said about 17 boats have already registered, but many fisherman wait until the day of the tournament to register.
Last year 49 boats were in the tournament.
Anyone who wants to register on Saturday will have to do so at the Selma Marina. Craig said anyone who registers Saturday can then make their way to Swift Creek or Roland Cooper State Park if they want to launch their boat there. He’ll be at the Selma Marina at 4 a.m. to continue registration. The cost to register is $110 per boat.
The winner will take home a $3,000 prize, but everyone in the top five will leave with a prize. Second place wins $1,000, third place wins $500, fourth wins $300 and fifth wins $200.
More than $500 in door prizes will also be given away and spectators will be included in those drawings. There is also a no fish pot for any fisherman that doesn’t catch a fish. Whoever wins that drawing will win $100.
