Local car dealerships are teaming up in November to help the United Way.

During the month, five local dealerships will donate $30 to the United Way of Selma and Dallas County for each car sold.

The participating car dealerships are Steve Lane’s Truck & Auto Sales, Moore-Stewart Honda, Moore-Stewart Ford, Reliable Cadillac GMC and Turner Chevrolet.

“The deal days event has been really good for us,” said local United Way executive director Jeff Cothran. “The local auto dealers do so much to support everything in town. They have always supported the United Way but this is a way for us to kind of highlight that.”

Cothran said he hopes the fundraiser is a win-win for both the United Way and the car dealerships.

“Hopefully, it helps the dealers as much as it helps us. Because the more cars they sell, the more money we get,” Cothran said. “I would love for them to sell 1,000 cars, and we could raise thirty grand and have a very Merry Christmas.”

The annual Deal Days event began back in 2013 and has grown to include more dealerships. This year the YMCA of Selma and Dallas County agreed to help the United Way promote the fundraiser.

“All of our partner agencies help us out during our campaign … They agreed to take this on as a project for us, and I think they have just done a fantastic job,” Cothran said.

The United Way is in the middle of its annual campaign that goes toward 15 agencies across Selma and Dallas County. A few of those include the American Red Cross, the YMCA, the Salvation Army, the Bosco Nutrition Center, the Cahaba Center for Mental Health, the Selma Area Food Bank and Boy and Girl Scouts.

The United Way also received a $100,000 anonymous gift this year and has used that money to help Arsenal Place Business Accelerator with renovations, Grow Selma to purchase the land for its community garden and the YMCA to build a soccer field for youth sports.
