Broad Street was full of characters Monday for Main Street Selma’s annual Monster March.

Kids came dressed as firemen, princesses and everything in between for the march, which took the children down Broad Street where businesses handed out Halloween candy.

“It’s awesome. What I’m most proud of is our downtown businesses. Every single business on Broad Street from the library down to Water Avenue has agreed to give out candy,” said Jerria Martin, interim director of Main Street Selma.

“It’s just a fun time for the community to come together. This is amazing. It’s a diverse crowd that’s just coming in the name of fun and unity and to be blessed by our downtown businesses.”

Namoi Chappell has been bringing her granddaughter Markia Evans to the march for four years, and said it’s something that kids always enjoy.

“It’s very exciting. The kids look pretty dressed so nice and they are so excited. They couldn’t wait to get out of school this afternoon to come down here,” Chappell said.“It gives the children something to do and makes them so happy. It’s very exciting going around to the stores, just being around amongst all the kids, they love it.”

Evans, a second grader at Clark Elementary was dressed as bat girl, and was ready for some candy.

“I’m very excited. I like super heroes,” Evans said.

She said her favorite part is “when you get candy.”
