Even a little bit of uniform confusion couldn’t slow down the Jr. Hurricanes Saturday at Memorial Stadium.

Both the Jr. Hurricanes (9-1) and Jr. Dolphins wore all green uniforms for Saturday’s game, making it hard for fans to see who had the ball.

In the end, it didn’t matter for the Hurricanes, who pulled away in the second quarter for a 38-16 win. There’s no playoffs at the 5-and-6-year old level, so the Hurricanes were already assured of winning the title going into Saturday based on having the best regular season record.

Even then, they left no doubt who the best team was on Saturday.

“I always coach we play four quarters, we play to the last whistle,” said Jr. Hurricanes coach Thomas Badie. “We were taught to play football. It’s not a game, it’s a learning experience. We learn as young men on the field and later on become young adults. That’s my motto.”

Jamarion Jones scored on a 40-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and Jamarji Acoff added the two-point conversion to put the Hurricanes up 8-6. Acoff and Jones added a touchdown apiece in the second quarter, putting the Hurricanes ahead 22-6.

Bryan Shears had a 4-yard rushing touchdown for the Dolphins to pull his team within 22-12 in the second quarter, but the momentum wouldn’t hold. Jones broke a 23-yard rushing touchdown with 0.6 seconds to play in the first half to put the Hurricanes ahead 28-12. Acoff added the two-point conversion to put the Hurricanes up 30-12.

After an explosive first half, the scoring slowed in the second half.

Amari England had a 15-yard rushing touchdown for the Dolphins in the third quarter, but Jones answered with his fourth touchdown rush of the game.

The Jr. Hurricanes were awarded their championship trophy after the game.

Badie said the team will get to celebrate with a banquet.

“There will probably be a lot of fruit punch and cake eating,” Badie said.

The Jr. Bengals were also given their runner-up trophy on Saturday.

The Jr. Dolphins (4-6) finished third in the regular season.

Dolphins head coach J’Vontae Furlow said the confusion with the uniforms didn’t make it easier on either team.

“It kind of threw them off. They were blocking their own players and tackling their own players,” Furlow said.

The rest of the youth football championships will be decided next week during the playoffs at Memorial Stadium.
