ORRVILLE — Selma point guard Jacquetta Dailey had a big night as the Saints routed Keith 63-33.
The Bears (0-1), usually hard to beat at home, didn’t lead the entire game. Dailey, who scored 18 points to lead all scorers, did most of her damage on the defensive end, turning Keith miscues into easy points at the other end.
“It’s been a while since we did that around here,” said Selma coach Anthony Harris, referring to the one-sided win over Keith. “They came out here and played pretty good ball.”
Keith put up a fight, pulling within two after falling behind 8-0 early, but the Saints pulled away again. Selma responded with a 16-0 run to end the first quarter. A 3-point play by Areyana Williams helped key the run.
Selma led 35-17 at the half. Keith pulled within 12 in the third quarter after back-to-back scores by junior Shatavia Moore, who led the Bears with 12 points before fouling out early in the fourth quarter.
After Keith pulled within 37-25, Selma finished the game on a 26-8 run.
Dailey made 9-of-14 shots and Selma made half its shots — 25 of 50 — as a team.
“We’ve got to put my effort and hustle into getting back on the defensive end and stopping the ball,” said Keith coach Cecil Williams.
“Not taking any credit from them. I like the way Selma High ran the floor, getting the ball out on fastbreak and we just didn’t.”
Keith also struggled at the free throw, shooting 13-for-34. The Bears also lost forward Jakayla Pettway to a knee injury, but the severity was not known.
