ECA asks for council’s help buying uniforms

Ellwood Christian Academy has asked the city of Selma to help it purchase new basketball uniforms for its varsity girls’ basketball team.
For the last several years, the school’s varsity girls’ team and the middle school boys team have shared uniforms, according to Gary Crum, who heads the school’s board.
The uniform issue has created problems with scheduling because the teams can’t play on the same day.
Crum estimated the cost of the new uniforms will be $1,000.
“I’m hoping we can get some support,” he said. “That’ll go a long way to helping the program.”
Crum said Ellwood headmaster Gerald Shirley made a request to city councilwoman Susan Keith, to see if the city could help the school get the money for the uniforms.
Keith brought it up during Thursday night’s council work session and floated the idea of using discretionary funding to pay for the purchase.
Crum said Ellwood has tried fundraisers, including car washes, to raise the money needed.
“With so many other schools in the area trying to do the same thing, it kind of scatters your resources,” Crum said.
Crum said the biggest headache with the teams sharing uniforms is with scheduling.
“They’ve been sharing for a while. We’re not one of those rich public schools,” Crum said.
“We make due with what we have.”
Keith said Thursday that the council will pass around a sheet for other council members to sign if they wish to help Ellwood by using some of their discretionary funds.
