After three quarters, nothing had been decided between the Packers and Panthers Saturday during the 9-and-10-year-old football championship.

Packers’ running back Rodney Martin broke that tie early in the fourth quarter when he ran around left end for a 2-yard touchdown. The score gave the Packers a 6-0 lead and Martin’s two-point conversion run made it 8-0, which was the game’s final score.

The Panthers mounted several serious drives but couldn’t get into the end zone.

“That defense is extraordinary,” said Packers coach Calvin Pritchett. “If it wasn’t for defense today, we probably wouldn’t have won.”

The Packers fumbled at the Panthers 13-yard-line with 36.7 seconds left in first quarter, ending a promising drive. The Panthers’ best drive of the first half ended on the Packers 11-yard line as time ran out in the second quarter.

The Panthers also received the ball to begin the second half, but they went three and out.

“I asked them who wanted it most,” Pritchett said. “Whoever scored first, they were going to win the game.”

With time running out, the Packers put together the only scoring drive of the entire game. Martin had a 38-yard touchdown run called back to a holding penalty, but that play still ended up playing a huge part in the game.

On the next play, the Packers ran what appeared to be the exact same play, except this time Martin handed to JoDarius Hamilton on a reverse. Hamilton ran 33 yards, down to the Panthers 9-yard line. Martin received the ball on the next three plays and the third time was the charm, as he ran into the end zone for the game winning score.

Behind the running of Omari Smith, the Panthers moved the ball to the Packers 28 in the game’s final minute. However, the drive stalled after the Panthers failed on a fourth down with 37.6 seconds left, ending the game.

The Packers finished the regular season unbeaten.

“I’ve got an extraordinary group. I love them all to death. They play their hearts out. Whatever I ask of this group, they do,” Pritchett said.

The Panthers only three losses during the season were to the Packers.

“We weren’t blocking, we weren’t getting in the backfield, we wasn’t communicating,” Smith said. “We could have won that game.”
