Late run allows Meadowview to top New Life

The Meadowview Christian basketball team may be starting to put it all together.
The Trojans (3-2) won their second game in a row Tuesday night by pulling away late for a 62-54 win over New Life Christian. Justin McGuire led the way with 18 points and 12 rebounds, including a breakaway dunk in the final minute.
“We missed free throws and layups for three quarters and then we made them in the fourth quarter,” said Meadowview Christian coach John Robert Morton. “That was the difference in the ballgame.”
The Trojans pressed New Life the entire game and fatigue may have set in for the visitors in the fourth quarter. Meadowview finished the game on a 13-6 run. Four different players scored in the fourth quarter for the Trojans, including Jeremy Lee, who had 13 of his 15 points in the second half.
“I really think the press the whole game wears people out. You press the entire game and get four or five turnovers at the end of the game, it’s worth it,” Morton said.
The teams were tied at the end of a slow paced first quarter. There wasn’t a single whistle until the 2:33 mark. Up until that point, the teams had went up and down the floor without committing a foul.
Meadowview finished the first half on a 10-2 run, including a 3-pointer by Kaymon McGuire that beat the buzzer. Sam Dabit also made one of his two 3-pointers during that run.
New Life cut the gap to one midway through the third quarter on a layup by Tyler Golden. Minutes later a shot by Josh Nichols tied the score at 47 apiece.
With the game teetering in the balance, Dabit made a 3-pointer to put Meadowview back up four. Lee drove for a layup and then stole an inbounds pass and was fouled. He made both free throws to put Meadowview up 56-50.
McGuire put the finishing touches on the game, scoring back to back buckets to put Meadowview up nine.
While the Trojans played well, Morton said there’s a lot for his team to work on.
“We’ve had a few games where we’ve put it together for quarters and halves, but we have not put a whole game together yet,” Morton said. “This wasn’t any different.”
The win also gave Meadowview a 1-0 start to region play.
New Life 42, Meadowview 23 (Girls)
Sometimes, the ball just won’t go in the basket.
That was the case Tuesday night for the Meadowview Christian (2-1) girls’ basketball team. The Trojans made only seven field goals in a 42-23 loss to New Life Christian.
“They were just better than us tonight. We didn’t play well,” said Meadowview coach Lebo Jones. “We missed a lot of shots we should’ve made, didn’t rebound well and didn’t shoot free throws well.”
Mallory Freine led the way for Meadowview with 10 points. Hannah Thornton knocked down two first quarter 3-pointers to finish with 6 points.
“We only had 11 points at halftime and we only scored 12 in the second half, but a lot of credit to them. They have a good team. They are a fundamentally sound basketball team, ” Jones said.
