A 19-year-old male was shot and killed Friday night on Kayser Street.
Through a press release, Chief Johnny King with the Selma Police Department said officers responded to a call at 9:17 p.m. on the 1900 block of Kayser Street. Upon arrival, they found the victim inside the car with a gunshot wound. The victim was pronounced dead on the scene.
Dallas County Coroner Alan Dailey identified the victim as 19-year-old Jaequan Simmons.
“It’s another sad event in Selma. It’s a really sad situation when a young person loses their life,” said District Attorney Michael Jackson.
The shooting is the city of Selma’s 14th homicide in 2016.
Simmons graduated from Keith High School in 2015 and was a standout on the Bears’ basketball team during his time in high school. Keith assistant principal Tommy Tisdale said Simmons had been working at Bush Hog and still regularly attended Keith basketball games.
Many called him either “Jae” or “Squash,” a nickname he earned while playing basketball.
“He was still around the program,” Tisdale said. “His brother still plays on the junior varsity team. He was at practice yesterday and just at the game the day before.”
Tisdale said Simmons was always smiling.
“That was him. I looked through my phone [at photos] and saw that big smile on his face,” Tisdale said.
