Bowie is president of the Selma City Council.

It is an esteemed honor and privilege to serve as your president of the city council. As 2016 draws to an end and the year 2017 comes in with much anticipation for the city of Selma. In the new year as council president, I see the spirit of cooperation being the central theme in 2017. In this season of advent, we must continue to count our blessings and not our problems. We have a new mayor, Mayor Darrio Melton and four new council members: Councilman Bowline, Councilwoman Jackson, Councilman Leashore and Councilwoman Thomas. I look forward to working with these municipal leaders to catapult our city to greater heights. As leaders, we must set the tone and direction through our attitude, behavior and willingness to be servants. If we as Selmians unite under the banner of one Selma there is no limit we cannot exceed. Selma’s reputation alone demands respect. The world will be watching Selma in 2017 so we must work collectively to move forward. I am optimistic we can address the myriad of problems that plague our community through our faith and determination to say “no more.” Unequivocally as your council president I am ready to embrace the challenges by working with the Selma and Dallas County Chamber of Commerce, Economic Development Authority, educational entities, law enforcement, spiritual leaders and county and state government to make Selma a better place to live, shop and enjoy quality of life. As you enjoy the festive season with family and friends please remember to keep Christ in Christmas. On behalf of my family I want to wish everyone a prosperous new year.
